Emerging Issues Discussion 6 of 7

Join us for our once-a-month discussion series at the Park City Senior Center. Led by member, Bob Shallenberg, each Emerging Issues discussion will center around a topical or political issue and feature a 30-minute introductory video followed by 30 minutes of civil discussion.
The sixth discussion, entitled “The Path to Uncivil Political Speech,” will revolve around the following subtopics:
- Political norms – the unwritten rules that normally guide behavior
- The history of political polarization, speech and violence
- A scale for measuring incivility in political speech – the dignity index
- Factors that promote political polarization
- A decline in trust
- Fear
- Zero-sum thinking
- Prior beliefs
- Us versus them and the psychological need for belonging
- Tribalism
- Social media
- Free speech – back in the spotlight
- Reclaiming the promise of “We the People”
